Biography

Gokhan Inalhan received his B.Sc. degree in Aeronautics from Istanbul Technical University in 1997, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University, in 1998 and 2004 respectively. In 2003, he has received his Ph.D. Minor from Stanford University on Engineering Economics and Operations Research (currently Management Science and Engineering). Between 2004 and 2006 he had worked as a Postdoctoral associate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During this period, he had led the Communication and Navigation group in the MIT-Draper Laboratory NASA CER project. Currently, he is a Professor at Istanbul Technical University, Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Aeronautical Engineering Department. Prof. Inalhan has published more than 100 papers, book chapters, technical reports and proceedings on flight controls and avionics systems, spacecraft design and controls, design of manned aircraft and unmanned vehicles, air transportation, large-scale optimization, advanced guidance, navigation and controls. He is the founder of the Controls and Avionics Laboratory of ITU and co-founder of ITU Aerospace Research Center. The laboratory has designed and built the first student satellite from Turkey : ITU pSAT I. The Laboratory has been involved in numerous research and industrial projects from institutes and companies such as EC, BOEING, TUBITAK, Turkish Airlines, ASELSAN and TAI. In addition, the laboratory is recipient of various TUBİTAK, international and national recognitions for the projects completed. Prof. Inalhan is a senior member of AIAA and IEEE, and serves as a member of IEEE Technical Committee on Aerospace Controls, IFAC Transportation Systems Technical Committee, and Eurocontrol Agency Research Team (ART).

Prof. Gokhan Inalhan is the Director General of ITU Aerospace Research Center and he is currently appointed as an Advisor to ITU Rector on R&D in Aerospace and Defense Sectors.

• Lead a group of eight engineers from MIT, Draper and Payload Inc. in designing communication and navigation architecture concepts for NASA’s mission to Moon and Mars in 2020-2030 timeframe.

Project: Decision making Under Uncertainty (Office of Naval Research)
• Developed a new optimization method which allows decentralized control of large-scale dynamic systems that are governed by multiple decision makers. Demonstrated the theory on air-traffic control of unmanned air-vehicle fleets and basic supply-chains. The algorithm and the simulation code was ported and successfully implemented on a three vehicle rover test-bed in MIT for real-time experimental demonstration.

Project: Software Enabled Control (Defense Advanced Research Project Agency)
• Designed a GPS/IMU integrated navigation algorithm for “DragonFly I” experimental unmanned air vehicle platform.
• The navigation algorithm was successfully used by team members in flight experiments to demonstrate new nonlinear control laws and dual aircraft closely spaced parallel approaches for landing.

Research Assistant, Formation Flying Lab., Stanford University, Stanford, CA 6/1998 –12/1999
Project: Formation Flying in Space Using Differential GPS (NASA Goddard Space Flight Center)
• Analyzed the formation flying problem for micro-satellites. Proposed and implemented a distributed fuel optimal control system for “ORION” micro-satellites. The trajectory planning portion was experimentally verified with a colleague using “Free-Flying Space Robots” in Aerospace Robotics Lab (ARL).
• Found a closed form expression for obtaining periodic formation patterns around eccentric orbits. This solution resulted in an order of magnitude increase in the designed mission life and appeared at an undergraduate astrodynamics textbook by Schaub and Junkins “Analytical Mechanics of Space Systems”, 2003
